The topic of 2019 was recycling • what is happening to it, how sustainable is it, and how can we improve it? It was not just the solid waste industry asking these questions either. Local communities, municipal leaders, state and federal officials, and anyone concerned with recycling have been discussing how we got where we are and where we are going. With the turn of a new year, SWANA looks to the future of recycling.
This webinar examined recycling from multiple angles. First, a representative from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) speaks about the work they have been involved in, including bringing together numerous stakeholders to create a National Framework for Advancing the U.S. Recycling System, committing to set a voluntary national recycling goal, and showcasing innovative recyclers. We then explore the legislative landscape, including major bills that have been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate to help support recycling. Finally, we discuss the importance of markets and how they have affected the recycling industry with a look at trends on the horizon.
