The U.S EPA Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program (GHGRP) dataset contains the most comprehensive and complete information for reporting landfills available. Approximately 1200 MSW landfills report annually under the GHGRP, comprising more than half of the existing landfills in the United States. Four years of data have been collected since the program's inception in 2010, and trends are beginning to emerge on a sectoral- and facility-specific level.

This presentation (1) provides an overview of the data collected for MSW landfills, (2) characterizes facilities that report to the program and their emissions, (3) discusses trends between reporting years, and (4) highlights the impact of the most recent revisions to the program.

The GHGRP requires municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills generating more than 25,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents per year to report their annual GHG emissions and other associated data. Under the GHGRP, MSW landfills include the landfill, the landfill gas collection system, and devices that combust landfill gas, including flares, engines, thermal oxidizers, and turbines.
