This report compares the cost-effectiveness of source-separation and mixed waste recycling systems for multi-family buildings. Published performance and cost data were analyzed for the cities of Seattle, WA and San Jose, CA.

• Mixed-waste recycling systems tend to have higher diversion rates because they can divert more organics.
• Source-separation recycling systems tend to have higher quality recycling and compost than mixed waste.
